Whenever a major awards ceremony nears, you'll find an outcry to include of new categories to recognize unsung work and fill the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.
A fellow writer has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. The same goes for board games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent above others. This is the request: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and it will always spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why movie academies don’t do it. But it is a necessary evil in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.
To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.
Current Gaming Award Categories
The major gaming awards currently feature award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories actually cover numerous genres, allowing placement for numerous titles.
This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.
Recognition Challenges
Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles published annually lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title got overlooked for anything during that awards season
- Another creative title received no nominations during that ceremony
- Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Just some puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often modest productions, but the art behind logic titles is of massive significance. Well-known matching games count as most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for an extended period.
The famous puzzle experience challenges well-known building titles competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting with diverse game types.
Proposal and Rationale
Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.
And to reiterate, these represent titles that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers operate at the challenging frontier interactive creation, producing among most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait 35 years.
